Little Red Buttons Save Lives

They are called Ground Fault Current Interrupters (GFCIs) and you've probably seen these little red buttons on outlets in kitchens and bathrooms.

They help prevent electrical shocks and potentially fatal accidents and should be installed anywhere water and electricity can mix.

GFCIs monitor the flow of electric current. If an imbalance in the flow occurs, they will stop the current in order to avoid danger. When that happens, you have to press the red button to re-establish current to the electrical outlet.

Because GFCIs can wear out or become damaged, American Electric Power says they should be tested regularly, once per month.
